These cows produce milk containing a beta-casein protein called A1. When A1 beta-casein is digested, it releases a peptide called BCM-7 (beta-casomorphin-7). Some research suggests BCM-7 may trigger mild inflammatory responses in the gut lining of sensitive individuals. Indigenous Indian cow breeds — Gir, Sahiwal, Tharparkar, Red Sindhi — produce A2 milk.
